Freeways was created in 1987 when a Bristol school providing support for children and young adults with a learning disability decided to separate adult and children’s services. At that time, services were usually delivered together.
Philanthropists at the school recognised the need for a more individual and progressive approach. They created Freeways and Freeways Trust to provide specialist support and accommodation for adults in the region.
We started out with three residential homes, a day centre and around 30 members of staff (one of whom still works for Freeways).
To this day Freeways continues to provide support to individuals and rents accommodation and its offices from Freeways Trust who also rent directly to some individuals with a learning disability.
